Final project 04/29/11

After reading the final projects before class the one that got my attention the most was davids because i always wanted a tatoo.I love the idea of how david went into the tatoo parlor knowing the prejudgements everyone has about tattoo shops. For example his mom dispises the parlor just as my mother does. The more he gets into his project he learns that this is actually an art than just a reckless action. He also ends up getting a tatoo himself. I love how on the website he has his own vivid photos of the parlor which brings his story back to life. Davids project gave me the motivation to get into my project alot more.

reading 4/15/11

The article reading was "From down draft to Up draft" and what it was about was taking information you have recieved and collected and to make it into a better furnished version than just notes . Everyone has written drafts before in their life but some people look at drafts very different. Some students look at drafts as nothing as bunch of scribbles but people like me look at drafts as a momemt to get all my thoughts on paper. After i right the draft i like to leave it aside and look at it a couple days after and elaborate on my topic and furnish my ideas. My minor ideas become ideas i base my whole essay on.The main purpose of revisoin is to get a second attempt at rewriting your work how you want it percieved.

Interview

to interview someone sounds pretty basic. But to interview your informant correctly and successfully is very difficult if you are not properly equipped with the right tools. Alot of people go into interviews with pretty basic questions , not anticipating the unexpected , not building off other questions. Your goal in the interview is to get information you would have never guessed, informatiion that you have to dig for. So you must build your artillary with both open and closed questions to get to your goal. also do some research before you actually go into the interview so you are not blindsided and look very clueless about the subject because then the informant will give you really basic information. If you know your information already you can ask more advanced questions on topics you arnt to polished on. Also try and get the informant to describe and go into detail about stories ,artifacts and moments; because then you will get to the heart of the interview and the informant will open up alot more. For example the AIDS case in the book Jessie the informant is slowly lured into opening up when a sensitive subject about his dog is brought up and how much he cares for him and will miss him if anything happens to jessie because of the virus.

Listening is a big part of interviewing because if you listen carefully with gestures; showing your following along with the informant he/she will then feel motivated/encouraged to further elaborate on the subject at hand. I also learned this in the Comm Studies department because alot of people say communication majors are great speakers but what makes us great speakers is the superior listening skills we develop ;which gives us the advantage of knowing how to reply and give feedback to the speaker/listener.

  • Prepare to Listen
  • Prepare both open ended and closed questions
  • Give gestures
  • Dont be afraid to ask questions others wont ask
  • Eye contact
  • Dont get off subject too much

Bowling Alley

The reading for friday was All about our next essay assignment. and Mrs Williams is giving us a sneak  peak of how its suppose to be written. This seems to be the part of the project we get the most detail on the actual people because it incorporates interviewing.Interviewing is an amazing way to get sources that really help because you are hearing from an expert.  the writer of the essay is really into the bowling alley she talks to the manager and the lady at the front desk and there customers. She got all points of views of the Alley. I now know who i have to interview i will interview some students and natara and try and get ahold of mrs Gar barnes the leader of cma. Also i think i should find the history of Cma like when it was founded and what are future plans.Im looking forward to the next 4 weeks so i can get started on this part of the project.

Sample ethnograph

Sitting outside in the lobby right across from the Cma office and Office of student involvement and leadership
i am annalyzing the culture around and the enviroment. The random people walking in and out each of the offices and the kids using atm. FOr example right to the side of me there is two students talking about drama that they have with there roomates  and how the other is being "retarded". An artifact in this area would be the poster board and photos behind me . there is photos of crosses and random artistic photos probaly taken by the students.  Also the man using the ATM  seems very sophisticated did not speak a word ; he is just very quick in and out. He probably works at an office in the school. Very intresting lady she seems very nice just smiled at me and said hi dressed to "Nines"  actually kinda looked like express clothing.she also has a very buig lump on her neck. (she most likely was born with it). enough about her  and now onto how empty the lobby has just became; idk if it was me sitting here being odd typing as if its something a student isnt suppose to be doing or if its always like this at this timeHope fully i havent ruined this place for others .

Now really immature kids have approached the ATM screaming acting as if no one is here . they then proceed on saying "ohh yea theres people working here HAAHAHAHAH" an continue to talk loud
my words of advice  to them "grow up" or as my friend will farrel would say from step brothers "eat S**t"

TO ethno or not not to ethno

Well after reading a more elaborate versian of your ethno graph i can see exactly what you want us too do for this project. I need to get into alot of detail likethe crusty macaroni on the corner of the table for example. just to make people feel as if they were there. i need to take people to my cite and make em feel the culture and enviroment. and my attempt to make them feel the enviroment is to talk about actual conversations i here and music and smells in the air.for example the kid with very strong armani exchange cologne. Also another goal for the project is for me  is to become a part of the envirement and participate in actions.

Within this week the audio we heard about the camp also was interesting it made me want to be in a camp.

Ethnography

Well for my site i decided to choose a place i am completely new to. I have always seen the outside of this building as i walk to class but have never set foot inside of the building. Now i was offered housing to live there .I am now a resident of Pope Hall at bridgewater state university. I thought whats best to do to understand how everything goes in this residence hall than dedicating my project and first writing 2 essay on it. What i already kno of this building is it contains alot of sophmores student who are in the same year as me. Also there are no suites in the building and all bathrooms are public . YUCK . i have now lived her for a total of 3 days and i do not know what this place holds for me . Wish me luck

Iresearcher

Hello this is 1st actual post and many to come

Well after reading the iresearcher paper i learned alot of the writer she is really family oriented(spell check). Also she is really observant and pays attention to detail for example when she mentions how the pizza smell of the place and how the pizza was actually made .her family seems to be known at the bowling alley because they are frequent customers. This story of her bowling ally remind me of Wesgate lanes of my town because it is a get together of alot of people in my town of all ages because theres a bar aswell. The reading helped me understand what i want to look for in my project as well made everything alot clearer.

THank you for taking me on the experience
